Constraining Amazonian land surface temperature sensitivity to precipitation and the probability of forest dieback

چکیده

Abstract The complete or partial collapse of the forests Amazonia is consistently named as one top ten possible tipping points Planet Earth in a changing climate. However, apart from few observational studies that showed increased mortality after severe droughts 2005 and 2010, evidence for such depends primarily on modelling. Such are notoriously deficient at predicting rainfall Amazon basin how vegetation interacts with poorly represented. Here, we use long-term surface-based observations air temperature to provide constraint modelled sensitivity changes precipitation. This emergent also allows us significantly constrain likelihood forest dieback. We conclude dieback under IPCC scenario RCP8.5 (crossing point) not likely occur twenty-first century.

Fire-mediated dieback and compositional cascade in an Amazonian forest

The only fully coupled land-atmosphere global climate model predicts a widespread dieback of Amazonian forest cover through reduced precipitation. Although these predictions are controversial, the structural and compositional resilience of Amazonian forests may also have been overestimated, as current vegetation models fail to consider the potential role of fire in the degradation of forest eco...

The role of ecosystem-atmosphere interactions in simulated Amazonian precipitation decrease and forest dieback under global climate warming

A suite of simulations with the HadCM3LC coupled climate-carbon cycle model is used to examine the various forcings and feedbacks involved in the simulated precipitation decrease and forest dieback. Rising atmospheric CO2 is found to contribute 20% to the precipitation reduction through the physiological forcing of stomatal closure, with 80% of the reduction being seen when stomatal closure was...

Constraining Climate Sensitivity from the Seasonal Cycle in Surface Temperature

The estimated range of climate sensitivity has remained unchanged for decades, resulting in large uncertainties in long-term projections of future climate under increased greenhouse gas concentrations. Here the multi-thousand-member ensemble of climate model simulations from the climateprediction.net project and a neural network are used to establish a relation between climate sensitivity and t...

Monitoring the earth surface temperature and relationship land use with surface temperature using of OLI and TIRS Image

Earth surface temperature is an important indicator in the study of energy equilibrium models at the ground level on a regional and global scale. Due to the limitation of meteorological stations, remote sensing can be an appropriate alternative to the Earth's surface temperature. The main objective of this study is to monitor the surface temperature and its relationship with land use, which is ...

Impact of urban land cover change on land surface temperature

The rapid growth in urban population is seen to create a need for the development of more urban infrastructures. In order to meet this need, natural surfaces such as vegetation are been replaced with non-vegetated surfaces such as asphalt and bricks which has the ability to absorb heat and release it later. This change in land cover is seen to increase the land surface temperature. Previous stu...
